Started in sandbox 5 game years ago and I own 139 large widebodies (6 B767, about 100 A330-300, and 30 B777-300) and is in the process of retiring A320/A321 and I had climbed from 200th place to 23rd and still climbing up.

I owned around 1,000 for the airline I got top 10 reputation for. I don't see why anyone would need more than 1500 aircraft without spamming them.

Had around 3000 planes

Most I've ever had is around 1200 spread across 8 families & 3 manufacturers.  Of course one could go bigger, but I found the airline plenty big enough for my needs/desires.  I don't use up all the aircraft hours available either, so if I was going for max utilization, I could have made an airline of the same size with about 800 planes.

I'm up to about 50,000 planes in my two O1 airlines - ~33,000 in one and ~17,000 in the other. Also controlling an allied airline with ~12,000 planes.

If there's no empty routes to fill, I don't expand. If someone jumps my routes and cuts prices too dramatically, I leave.
I'm not playing that game, no way, no how.

You better be aware of me then! 

 

Largest fleet I have is Southern Airways with 230 aircraft and 100 more on order.

Right now in O1 I have an airline with 36,582 currently in my fleet with 3,706 on order. (Of course I have 15,900 idle aircraft....)

In a realistic world I think the largest I manage to create was 8,000 or so.
