#62108 [Sim2] Reset: Restart on friday

Posted by glarus on 17 June 2009 - 01:43 AM in Announcements

Ah yes, sorry about that. It works fine for the chain I had set up, but certainly not for the hub and spoke of one-ways. Thanks for setting me straight. :P

I think the weekly hours suggestion is a good one. I've said it before, I'll say it again. You guys are doing some great work, and we shouldn't forget Courtney too for laying the foundation for our ever-evolving game (that takes me away from so many things I'm supposed to do around the house.) I had all but abandoned this game right before you two started the overhaul, and sticking around has been well worth it.

Imagine Fly Dixie? You can't and that's the point! People like simple and fast.

Huh? That would be me, I don't know what you're saying.

In my mind, the whole one-way thing wasn't that complicated. To me, it meant

Monday TXL-ZRH, ZRH-CGK
Tuesday CGK-ZRH, ZRH-TXL

and repeat. The game doesn't show it that way, but it makes sense. I'm not sure we need to change anything. A one-way is an every other day flight.

#61893 [Resolved] Hub creation costs are way too high

Posted by glarus on 13 June 2009 - 11:11 PM in Bugs

Will there be any refunds for hubs created when the calculations were incorrect?

#61497 [Resolved] Hub creation costs are way too high

I just paid over $600 Million to hub JFK. Then I noticed the cost.

#61279 New Aircraft

Posted by glarus on 24 May 2009 - 02:27 PM in Suggestions and Feature Requests

That's too bad, have you flown in one?

Unfortunately, no. But Colgan Air does operate 340s out of my local airport, and I hope to have an excuse to fly on one some time :) The 2000 is one of the coolest planes that I guess was sadly a victim of the rush to buy RJs.

But dont they still make the Saab 340??? like the Saab 2000?

Production of both ceased in 1999.

#61052 SIM2 - Four New Aircraft

Posted by glarus on 14 May 2009 - 02:14 AM in Announcements

Another thing is the Tu-204 operational cost.
The problem with the Tu is the operating costs, It is less efficient than the 757 and the worldwide support service lacks, compared to Boeing or Airbus, which means that the support infrastructure is bad. If the plane breaks down, you are stuck. It may take a few days before spare parts can be flown in.This will be very expensive because you got an idle plane and you will have to hire a last-minute replacement aircraft. If you thought last minute flights that suit your exact wishes where expensive, you try booking a last minute plane!
That should be penalized somehow in the game.

I think that's not actually something to consider for our game, because number and dispersion of units worldwide is nothing like reality for many planes. If a Tupolev plane was very popular with players, then in our "world," spares would be everywhere, just as they are for Boeings which are everywhere in the real world. The Saab 2000, for example, is fairly popular in the game and it isn't penalized, even though in real life there are relatively few of them, and they haven't been made in a number of years.

For some reason, they're pretty terrible. I can't figure out why, considering the supposed operation cost.

#60627 SIM 2 , Slow Process

Posted by glarus on 01 April 2009 - 11:03 PM in Game Discussion (SIM2)

I (Fly Dixie) am the other source of the glut of used planes out there. I think we've reached saturation, and I just found myself having less fun lately, so I cashed it in. Enjoy the planes, everyone!

Contrary to what a lot of you think, I think that while the LF could use some tweaking, it isn't that bad. Some routes aren't profitable unless you fly from a hub city, but that's how real life is. Some routes aren't profitable unless you fly a Beech 1900 from a major hub to the small city, but that's how real life is. In real life you might not notice that, because those little towns are served by feeders, not major carriers. I was able to get profit from pretty much every route (once it was just $1!), even those where the outboard spoke was a city with a gate cost of as little as $10,000. I didn't go below $10K, I did discover those were too tough to get a green number.

So, to the people working on the game these days, *great job* on the improvements. I might take a round off, but I look forward to playing again in the future, and I know the game will be even better.

#60586 Serious overcrowding of a route!!!

Posted by glarus on 31 March 2009 - 03:06 AM in Game Discussion (SIM2)

He's also got 26 planes on LHR-EDI.

11 ATR-72-500
1 A320-200
15 Q400
5 A319-100
1 787-8

I'm sure there are others.

#60143 Range Data Updated

Posted by glarus on 19 February 2009 - 03:16 AM in Announcements

Several aircraft did lose range - will there be any negative effects if we have planes flying farther than they can? The 328 lost about 200 from its range, I have at least one flying a 1300+mile route...presumably once you leave the route, you can't get back on. That's understandable. Just wanted to make sure they weren't going to close themselves.

#60061 [Resolved] Wrong Runway Length

Posted by glarus on 16 February 2009 - 04:46 AM in Bugs

Not a bug, just a bad number that needs to be fixed.

Airport: OUL (Oulu, Finland)

Runway is 8,205 feet (2,501 metres)

(currently listed at 2,501 feet...any STOL aircraft being added soon? :))

#59686 Next Round

Posted by glarus on 13 January 2009 - 12:02 PM in Game Discussion (SIM2)

Something isn't right here. Right now, there's only a handful of airlines that have set up their routes, so there's little competition. Several are in Europe, one is in Asia, and two (including me) are in the U.S. The European fares are all over $110 (some of them are $400 or $500) and the Asian fares are $400-$500. Two airlines are flying LHR-CDG and the fares are $552 and $556. For the two of us in the U.S., our fares are below $100 with no competition between the biggest cities!

Flying a Beech 1900 1 time from ORD-ATL or ORD-DFW with no competition yields 20% load factors, and losses. If I reduce ORD-ATL to 1 frequency, the fare goes up to $220, but I still get a loss, because I can't get passengers. What's going on here?

#59545 Veteran Player ISO Alliance

Posted by glarus on 31 December 2008 - 02:44 PM in Alliances

I'm interested in joining an alliance, I'm excited that the concept is finally moving forward and will confer in-game benefits upon players. I'm interested in joining an alliance now, even though functionality has not yet been implemented and a reset is coming.

A bit about me:
ID: 15204
Airline names used: Bajan Holidays (current); Fly Dixie; Air Liechtenstein (I like changing them once in a while)
Highest achieved ranking in SIM2: 4 (several rounds ago)
Playing since: November 2006
Home continent: I start in North America or Europe; I'm not wedded to any particular city on either continent.

I'm interested in joining an alliance with other fairly motivated players. I'm not an "alpha" type (I'm not into bullying other players, just playing civilly with others), I've got too many things going on in meatspace to devote my life to AE, but on average, I log on at least twice daily and am a committed AE'er. If you think I'd fit well with your alliance, please send me an in-game message (15204).

I would also consider starting one, so if there are other players who also play regularly and for whatever reason aren't aiming to join an existing alliance, please message me in game to discuss.

Thank you, and Happy New Year!

#59538 I Had to Smile

Posted by glarus on 31 December 2008 - 04:42 AM in Game Discussion (SIM2)

I got to see a FedEx 757-200F taking off from DCA this morning ;) That was exciting. Also spent some time waiting for a flight out of Burlington VT (BTV) on Monday, that was fun. Aside from Jet Blue's Airbuses, it's mostly regional jets and turboprops. But as an added bonus, the VT Air National Guard, "The Green Mountain Boys" were getting some stick time in the F-16s, practicing takeoffs and landings, and maneuvers around the area. Dual-use airports like that are neat. In between all the civil air traffic, suddenly you'd hear this roar as a fighter took off, sometimes with afterburner, sometimes without. Good stuff.

#59381 I Had to Smile

Posted by glarus on 15 December 2008 - 02:43 PM in Game Discussion (SIM2)

Apparently, I completely by chance witnessed history, as it was the first 767 ever to come into DCA. It was a flight from ATL. There's a whole thread on it over at airliners.net, and videos of the takeoff and landing at youtube. ;)

#59376 [Resolved] Negative funds after changeover despite no purchases

Posted by glarus on 15 December 2008 - 11:14 AM in Bugs

I can't relate all the figures exactly, but when I woke up this morning, I had -$360,000 on the 3rd of the month. My gate leasing costs were about $2,600,000. When I went to bed, I had over $5,500,000, and my DOP is about $393,000. So if I last logged in ten hours ago, shouldn't I now have somewhere around:

$5,500,000 + (cash on hand when I went to bed)
$786,000 + (revenue this month)
$3,930,000 - (April revenue while I was sleeping)
$2,600,000 = (gate costs last month, taken at changeover)

$7,616,000 ???

I can't figure out where my money went, I didn't buy (couldn't afford) any new planes last month. Looks like I can't this month, either...

ETA: I read the other thread, and I didn't buy any planes last month for which I was charged 50%, either, so I don't think it's that.

#59351 I Had to Smile

Posted by glarus on 14 December 2008 - 12:57 PM in Game Discussion (SIM2)

Last week I posted about the runway restrictions preventing flights that in real life do occur. Specifically, I watch 757-200s and 737-800s fly to and from DCA all the time. It was satisfactorily concluded that using MTOW is a limitation of the game we can't overcome, so that's fine. Imagine my surprise when I arrived at work the other day, after the thread had been discussed, and saw a Delta 767-300 coming in for a landing. :shappy:

#59077 Taking requests for airports to add to Sim2

Posted by glarus on 07 December 2008 - 05:14 PM in Game Discussion (SIM2)

As mentioned in my second entrry to this thread, ISP was the first special request airport I did... its already submitted... just waiting for Tobias to add it to the database when he gets a few spare minutes.

And ISP is much appreciated. I've been waiting for a long time for this one. ;) Thanks!

#59057 [Resolved] No aircraft actually delivered month end Sept Year 1

A330-300 (Trent 768)

#59049 [Resolved] No Planes Delivered

Same happened to me. I paid the money, got the message, and the planes disappeared from my pending deliveries, but I didn't get the planes ;)

#59015 [Resolved] Adjust B752 & B738

Posted by glarus on 06 December 2008 - 03:21 AM in Bugs

The runway length for DCA is listed as 6,869. The required runway for the B737-800 is listed as no less than 7,060, and for the 757-200, it's listed as a minimum of 7,050. I watch 738s and 752s fly out of DCA every day.

Here's one:

Flight: AA 1009 (American Airlines)
Depart: Washington Ronald Reagan National Apt 5 Dec 06:00
Arrive: Dallas/Fort Worth Intl Apt 5 Dec 08:35
Aircraft: 738 Stops: Non-Stop
Click here for details Travel Time: 3hrs 35mins

and another:

Flight: DL 343 (Delta Air Lines)
Depart: Washington Ronald Reagan National Apt 5 Dec 07:00
Arrive: Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Intl Apt 5 Dec 09:00
Aircraft: 757 Stops: Non-Stop
Click here for details Travel Time: 2hrs

WMAA's website does agree, the longest runway is 6,869 feet, so the minimum needed for both aircraft must be wrong (maybe we're using length needed for maximum takeoff weight?)
