744, 77W. Replacement?

14 November 2012 - 07:28 PM

My high-capacity, long haul fleet is mainly based on 747-400s (non-ER).
I've tried to replace them with the smaller 777-300ERs (upping frequencies in turn), but the runway performance of this type leaves a lot to be desired.

Since older airframes need replacement and the 744 is already out of production in the game I'm in, I'm looking for new aircraft.

The 748 looks attractive, but I'm not sure if the long turnaround time is offset enough by the speed increase.
Anyone running 748s and 744s side by side and able to comment on that?

Any other futureproof planes suitable for most runways and a 450-550 seat layout?

Competitors, listen up!

If you really need to fulfill your desire to compete with me, at least undercut my pricing SENSIBLY to ease the hit in revenue and not just leave things at default before dashing off to jump yet another of my routes.

Sincerely, on peeved off player.

Competing - how not to

Route demand: 6/37/267

Airline 1 has 3/31/309 (excessive Y demand)

Airline 2 comes in with 0/67/607.

Can't decide whether dumb or troll as he's not going to make any money.

A 1982 economic crisis?

Anyone else taking an awfully huge hit in demand on some routes?

I've got some that went from 150 to 50 basically over night.

Did Yuxi adjust something or did the "randomize demand" function go crazy?

Totally whack...

Limiting airline size

These 1000 plane cancers airlines are totally ruining the game for me. You just can't open a route without having one of these joining in after a day and taking away all your revenue. The fun really starts when a second 800 plane+ cancer airline joins in and you suddenly have 1500 seats/day on a 500 pax/day route. That's just stupid and I seriously doubt that one would be clever enough to jump into a market that is already (over)saturated. And you just can't start an outright war, because they have the cash to strike back or at least sustain temporary losses while you are going to lose in any case.

Hence, I suggest making managing big airlines more difficult to manage by doing away with such functions as:

- Route suggestions (in case they are still somewhere in AE3.1). Every route should have to be hand picked, hand reviewed and hand judged.

- The "match lowest price on selected routes" batch function. Pricing has to be controlled by closely looking at each and every route instead of just clicking a batch button.

- The "route network size" indicator in the airline options. It can be left in, but it shouldn't add to the overall reputation. Even airlines with 60 destinations can have an excellent reputation with their customers and the public.

- Revise the ranking system. Base it on overall airline efficiency instead of sheer size.

- Heck, one could even implement a "price/capacity fixing suggestion" button that automatically offers a competitor(s) on a selected route a user suggested price or capacity to maximize revenue for all sides. There's no Department of Transport in AE to check for anticompetitiv measures after all.

Or simply, for a start:

- Limit fleet size in games. 500 aircraft should be more than enough (Real airlines sometimes have more, I know. But AE already simplifies a lot of aspects of real airline operations, so 500 is okay in my book.)

More suggestions are welcome.

And yes, I'd much prefer ten airlines with 100 aircraft each than one 1000 aircraft cancer airline.
