Used planes - high costs?

Hey, im new here.

I'm in world 8. I tried to lease some Super VC-10s. They were rather cheap (and old), and i could only make losses with them. How exactly does the cost system work? Is it based on fuel prices/consumption or the age of the plane? What is a decent plane on the used market - what should i look for?
