Just do mergers the old fashioned and realistic way. By painstakingly selling off the planes from one airline, buying them with the other airline, then recreating the routes from the former. It's realistic because mergers require a stupidly high amount of coordination between two entities to synchronize their operations under one brand. It takes forever in the real world so it should take forever in game.

Thank you for clearing this up.

Partial refund on shutdown yes, sold out no.

In retrospect, the idea of keeping the money, even after the world ends (or using it across worlds), doesn't tickle my fancy. Only the merging/buying airlines part ...

I think Auctioning the assets is better, especially the aircraft, terminal building, and slots.

Store money for another world? No, there would be too much misuse. Every airline starting with minimum is okay just as it is. Even 100M which is not much for a big airline would be a huge difference at the beginning.
Otherwise, I like TNT's idea, AUCTIONING, that would be a great thing! Terminals should not just be "destroyed" (forgotten) by the game, lots of airports have competition for gates for sure and auctioning should be a better choice than pure luck, and also desirable aircraft shouldn't just be listed and the lucky one who sees first gets it, e.g. first week on the market should be auction time (with reserve lowest price, of course)!

How would auctions work across time zones?

It sounds like an idea with a lot of potential, though it can be abused, as many have said you can have a spamline in a new world due to a sale of an airline, and buying an airline can also be used to bypass the restrictions if you merge, unless mergers are of course prohibited in these cases.

How would auctions work across time zones?
The auction is based on the amount of money people would put on the assets for 3-4 months game time (Which is roughly around 24 hours in real life). The highest bidder at the end of those time will win the assets. It would also have 1 months notifications of game times on the bidding. People would just press the buttons to claimed the assets just like e-bay.
Time zone wouldn't be a problems for this. Also, the bidding only happen once a year where all the assets of the airlines that have been shut down would be combined.
