#293301 Somehow bought re-engined 707's?

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 06 February 2024 - 01:17 PM in General AE Discussion

I really can't overstate just how little your opinion means to me.

… and yet you bothered to reply.

You may be less of a cheat than Zempleair, but you are nonetheless a cheat.

Cheaters suck.

Oh, the irony.

#293269 Somehow bought re-engined 707's?

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 23 January 2024 - 10:45 PM in General AE Discussion

I'm aware that it's unfair to have 24 707's with vastly improved fuel flow compared to other players.

That's odd, and definitely an advantage. But nothing like running a spam line like Alpha Waffle does.

#293228 Miscellaneous/Incidentals and other expenses

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 22 December 2023 - 02:34 PM in General AE Discussion

Could someone explain to me where those miscellaneous/incidentals costs are coming from...I have huge amounts 1.5M, 800K, 650K per month...and as you can imagine it impacts heavily the finance sheet.

I think that is where costs of opening a new route, setting up a hub, etc. go.

Furhermore I do not understand why with a full profitable network, no competition I am loosing so much money due to Miscellaneous/incidentals and staff training (I may understand that flying crew, cockpit and airport staff may have training every month...but administrative staff or managers....sounds a little bit strange.

Staff training, including managers, happens automatically as you add aircraft.

Basically, I think you are feeling the effects of growth.

#293224 Cash is king

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 18 December 2023 - 10:18 AM in New Players and Questions

CA$H!!!

I will say that watching the 15th is unnecessary if you operate a strategy which earns you more profit per day than an entire month of wages for all employees.

Well, yes. But that looks like a pretty extreme case and I am not sure how you would achieve that position. How do you do it?

#293217 Cash is king

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 14 December 2023 - 07:37 PM in New Players and Questions

There is a saying in business: “revenue is vanity, profit is sanity, cash is reality”.

Businesses fail for many reasons but what usually triggers the end is running out of cash. High sales with good margins are great, but if you cannot pay the bills then you have a major problem.

AE is no different. If you want a highly ranked airline, managing your cash flow, especially in the early years, is vital.

Obviously running out/short of cash will prevent you ordering new aircraft, but that is not all. Missing a lease payment incurs a 20% penalty on the next payment and reduces your credit rating. The worse your credit rating the higher the interest rate on new bonds, and the fewer aircraft you can lease. To reduce gate lease costs, you need to build terminals. In short, cash matters.

There are two components to managing cash well: forecasting cash available in the coming month, particularly in the early years, and cash-improving actions throughout the game.

I do the former using a simple spreadsheet (yes, sad) for the first year or so, thereafter it’s an even rougher calculation in my head.

There are two key days to watch: the 15th of each month, when payroll is due, and the 24th, when maintenance is paid. The converse is that the day after each are the ones when you can be most certain about how much you can safely spend.

Cash-positive actions include:

·       Maximise the use of aircraft (doh)

·       Maximise the use of gates (doh)

·       Choose routes with lower gate costs

·       Minimise the number of aircraft types you operate

·       Buy/lease multiple aircraft of the same type & configuration at the same time

·       Build terminals

If you get it wrong, it is not necessarily a disaster. In my current game, less than two years’ in, I have missed several lease payments but still enjoy a triple-A rating. But, if you do it repeatedly, then recovering to a game-leading position is tough. You might as well pull the pin: cease operations, start again, or join the next game.

#293208 R1 paused

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 06 December 2023 - 04:42 PM in General AE Discussion

I have sent a DM to Yuxi in case he was not aware of it.

It seems that did the trick.

#293205 R1 paused

I did see that a different R world was reset and maybe R1 got paused as well by accident?

I wondered about that.

Hi all

Wed 6th Dec, 07:07 GMT in RL.

3rd Oct 1959 in AE/R1 and has been for at least an hour of real time.

Never seen a world pause mid-game before. Has anybody else?

#293187 routes from diffo country

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 02 December 2023 - 02:26 PM in New Players and Questions

Isnt that relevant between EU-US only?

There are multiple Open Skies agreements in both RL and AE.

The EU-US Open Skies agreement does not exist in AE, however the EU agreement that grants 7th freedom rights within the region to EU-based airlines does.

#293185 Gate Leasing

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 01 December 2023 - 04:45 PM in New Players and Questions

The significant cost differences between your three terminals in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah could be attributed to several factors.
1. Size and Capacity:
2. Location and Demand: The location and demand for air travel in each city can impact costs. Dubai, being a major global hub with high passenger traffic, might have higher expenses due to increased demand and infrastructure requirements.
3. Airport Fees and Regulations: The fees imposed by airport authorities and local regulations can vary among different locations. These fees can include landing fees, security charges, and other operational expenses set by the respective airport authorities.
4. Facilities and Services: Differences in the quality and extent of facilities and services provided at each terminal can impact operating costs. Terminals offering more amenities and services may have higher expenses to maintain and operate those facilities.
5. Airlines and Contracts: The contracts and agreements between airlines and airport authorities can also influence costs. Airlines might negotiate different terms and conditions, including fees and charges, based on their operations and requirements.                                                                Drift Boss

In AE the only thing that matters is the game's view of annual passengers.

#293184 Any way how to list all routes?

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 01 December 2023 - 04:40 PM in New Players and Questions

Caution.

Changing that option triggers other settings, particularly the map. It's a pain but I prefer to stick with the 25 per screen.

#292958 Map problems?

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 16 September 2023 - 09:14 PM in New Players and Questions

Have not seen this behaviour myself but a couple of thoughts:

- changing preferences causes map to default away from Google

- a complex map takes a long time to load, presumably a memory thing

#292946 How to create seatmaps?

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 05 September 2023 - 10:07 PM in Logo / Livery Requests

Hi, as the title suggests, I want to know what everyone uses to make seatmaps?

Seatmaps? Why would anyone bother? Serious question.

#292919 A350 or 787?

I have no strong preference. Often end up with both, usually more 777s because they are available first.

#292888 Gate Leasing

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 11 August 2023 - 03:05 PM in New Players and Questions

Gate leasing fees, in dollars, are 1% of the annual passengers through that airport.

Correct.

When you build terminals, the fee structure is much more complicated; you get a discount the more gates you build.

The first part of the two formulae below is fixed so the more gates you build/add the average cost per gate reduces.

Build: 83 x the base lease + 8 x the base cost x total number of gates

Extend: 16.67 x the base lease + 8 x the base cost x additional gates

#292871 Increasing Profit Margin

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 09 August 2023 - 05:04 AM in New Players and Questions

If someone can explain me how do you achieve the on-time factor, never managed to figure out! Is it the same than "time-flown"? In that case, is it just about the ideal distance for that aircraft type? Someone told me it had to do with salaries but I'm not sure it's correct.

On Time Performance reflects delays due to whatever reason.

Time Flown shows how long you have operated that route (three years to get "green" IIRC).

AFAIK there is no measure that reflects "ideal distance" for an aircraft, which has no clear definition anyway.

#292860 Time flown/ on-time performance

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 08 August 2023 - 11:21 AM in New Players and Questions

Hi,

If someone can explain me how do you max out the on-time performance factor, never managed to figure out!
Is it the same than "time-flown"? In that case, is it just about the ideal distance for that aircraft type?

Someone told me it had to do with salaries but I'm not sure it's correct.

Thank you very much in advance.

I understand that it is a combination of factors. Utilisation is certainly one and I have also read that salaries is another. You also see that airports show a congestion penalty but I can't recall any that are anything other than 0%, this has never been activated.

#292823 Players are cheating or exploiting any game bug???

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 25 July 2023 - 08:51 AM in General AE Discussion

The game is working as it's supposed to from a technical perspective. I'm sure the devs didn't expect the strategy to be so strong, and it definitely isn't realistic (like much of this game), but that doesn't make it a bug.

Yes, it works technically but that does not mean it isn't a bug. Whatever the cause - unintended consequence or bug - we agree that it is unrealistic. Certainly there are other unrealisms but this is the only one that really distorts game-play. That all said, we are dancing with the semantics. It is what it is and the devs show no interest in fixing it.

Then again, everyone seems to draw the line just above what they're doing, so

I agree with this. For example, I am OK with high price/low quality IFS; my rationale for it being OK is that there is a downside (poor IFS rating, which affects reputation, route take-up, etc.) whereas exploiting the connecting passengers feature does not.

#292820 Players are cheating or exploiting any game bug???

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 24 July 2023 - 06:21 PM in General AE Discussion

Not a cheat or bug exploit, just a weird game mechanic as per the post above.

Not sure how you distinguish between a weird game mechanic and a bug.

#292819 Still confused about hubs

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 24 July 2023 - 06:17 PM in New Players and Questions

Thanks for the answer. Is it worth flying routes to the same location from 2 separate routes? If A and B are both hubs does it make sense flying an A-C and B-C route simultaneously?

I don't know whether hubs being connected like that makes any difference to number of connecting pax. I would focus on whether the routes are profitable in themselves/more so than other routes you could fly.

#292808 Still confused about hubs

Posted by TarquinShrapnel-Carruthers on 23 July 2023 - 09:39 PM in New Players and Questions

Hi so I've been trying to find info on hubs and from what I've gathered they provide "connecting passengers" that pay 50% the price of regular tickets but fill up empty seats on an airplane. Sorry if this question seems kind of redundant, but does that mean if my daily seats on the market (between 2 of my hubs) is greater than daily demand, my flights will still have 100% load factor but make a slightly less money per flight? I'm guessing the end game here is to flood hub-hub routes with flights regardless of the daily demand as you'll still be earning lots of money through the half-priced connecting passenger tickets. Thanks.

Edit: I noticed the load factor meter has a small blue section next to the green section, is that the connecting passengers indicator?

You will have some extra load, but not necessarily 100%. The more hubs you have at airports with lots of pax the more connecting pax there will be on all of your routes to/from a hub.

The blue section is indeed connecting pax, the size reflects how many there are.
