Terminals and keeping gates

If I build a terminal at an airport that currently has no gates left, but I only use 3 of the 5 gates, what happens to the rest of the gates?

I think the best way would be for them to remain in your control indefinitly, but is that really the case? My thinking is that they go back onto the airport in two game months like other unused gates.
