SS Friedrich der Grosse, along with Kronprinz Ruprecht are the largest passenger ships ever built in Germany, at 1,057 ft long and 122 ft wide, Friedrich der Grosse and Kronprinz Ruprecht each displace 88,546 tons, with Kronprinz Ruprecht slightly less at 87,942 tons displacement. Designed for the commercial run to New York from Bremerhaven and Hamburg each ship has a reinforced hull; doubling in thickness 15 feet above the waterline extending all the way around the hull, including their double bottoms, propeller shafts and rudder, giving them superior capabiliites during winter. with 60 watertight compartments that can be individually closed in case of a hull breach, and excellent fireproofing, they are considered the safest ships on the North Atlantic.
