Maybe this is mentioned somewhere already but I just haven't found it...

but when the time period for a world is up (for example, here in AE1, 2020...)

What happens when the world resets?

Do you lose your entire airline and start from scratch, or does your airline carry on into the new world with all the settings still intact?

The game is completely reset. All airlines are deleted / reset and you start again. Its the best way of keeping things fresh and giving everyone the chance to make it to the top.

I see that AE1 ends in "2030" -- but does this mean January 1st or December 31st?

It will run until 3.1 worlds start, regardless of the labeled end date.
