Zambian Airlines

IATA: Z5 | ICAO: ZYM | CALLSIGN: ZAMBIA
Headquarters / Base: Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN)

Formed in the late 1940s as Zambia Air Service (ZAS), it originally operated a series of small turboprops linking the country's various mines. The airline shut down in 1989 and its two remaining Beech 18 turboprops were left to rot in one of the many dirt airstrips scattered around the African nation.
The 1991-present iteration of the carrier presently operates fifteen aircraft, consisting of 737-200s, 737-300s, 737-400s, DHC-7s, DHC-8s, Cessna Caravans as well as a single Boeing 777-200.

Pictured below is Zambian Airlines's sole Boeing 777, 9J-JRU, an ex-China Pacific 777-200 built in 1996. Introduced in 2017 to replace the pair of 1980-vintage Douglas DC-10s, the widebody is seen on the airline's flagship long-haul routes including LUN-BKK-CAN and LUN-LGW as well as occasional capacity fillers on regional African routes.

Zambiair took delivery of its three DC-10s in 1996, which allowed the beginning of long-haul flights to London-Heathrow, and New York.

The future looks bright for the airline, with 2 brand new 787-9s due for 2024.

Starting up sometime in the late 1990s to early 2000s (no one knows for sure as the records were lost) with 2 Boeing 737-200Cs, ZambeziWings operated cargo and passenger flights to random dirt airports in the middle of nowhere. In 2010 the airline began scheduled passenger services based out of Lusaka with secondhand EMB-120s and ERJ145/140s.

The airline has been banned from the EU since it was founded and will probably continue to be as long as they fly 732s (without gravel kits) into dirt airfields that are most certainly too short for the aircraft, yet they somehow still pull it off. In 2014, 737-200C 9J-ZAG disappeared while operating a flight to an unknown airfield in Chad, the aircraft was never found.

Current Fleet:

3 ERJ145
1 ERJ140
2 EMB120

Background

Zambezi Air Charter was founded in 2016 under the administration of President Edgar Lungu as part of a larger plan to develop the nation's economy. The premise was a flexible airline which could cater to the seasonal tourism rushes as well as support the logistical operations of the nation's ore mining operations.

Zambezi Air Charter placed an initial lease for four EMB-120s from various different airlines, and commenced operations on November 27th of 2016. During the 2017 Paris Air Show, Zambezi agreed to lease one 787-8 aircraft from AerCap. The aircraft would be delivered new from Boeing in September of 2019. Between 2017 and 2021, Zambezi also placed leases on four more EMB-120s including two of the EMB-120FC dedicated freighter variant for domestic logistics. In late 2021, it would be announced that a second 787-8 would join the Zambezi fleet. Although the airline has not publicized the specifics of the deal, it is speculated that the airframe will be the ex. Hainan Airlines B-2729 following reports that the frame was flown to maintenance after two years of COVID related groundings.

The airline operates regular bi-weekly flights to London's Heathrow and Johannesburg as well as a weekly flight to Dubai, all on the Boeing 787. The airline also operates a vast variety of regional flights including both scheduled passenger services as well as charter operations for executives, corporations, and tourists. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Zambezi Air Charter switched it's main focus onto humanitarian missions such as vaccine and medical supply distribution. During this time, the airline ceased all international passenger travel and placed it's sole 787 on cargo flights to Hong Kong and New York (via Dakar).

The airline remains crucial to many communities and industries in Zambia and is projected to see massive growth in the years following the global pandemic.

ZAMBEZIAIRTAXI | Callsign: Victoria | ZT/ZAT | LVI/FLHN

Zambezi Air Taxi is a small Zambian airline established in the mid 2010s operating a small fleet of Cessnas C208s, with its main base of operation being Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport airport near Livingstone, Zambia. It flies on demand flights around Zambia and the neighbouring countries, but also sightseeing flights, small cargo charters, and medical evacuation flights. The C208s are perfect for operating out of short unpaved runways, and were chosen specifically for this reason. The airline is currently reviewing larger twin planes to expand its operations.
