I think a really good feature that could improve the game is the ability to extend runways at airports with shorter runways to accommodate larger aircraft. I think it could have a cost that is similar to building a new terminal at an airport.

Let me know your thoughts.

To be fair, you're already able to build terminals with literally hundreds of gates at any airport.

While often not to the extent sometimes seen here, airlines can and do have their own terminals at some airports irl.

Airlines do not or at least extraordinarily have any say in the state or length of a runway, so I highly doubt this feature would be considered.

I know, I was just showing that there are already ways for the airport in-game to differentiate from its real-life counterpart.

Absolutely no, this would only cater to spammers who would send A380s to small airports to create their artificial demand. And paired with the 200 gate terminals, that would be totally disastrous for people trying to play more realistically. I'd even say to decrease the gate limit at terminals to 100 mainly because I'm not sure of any airline with more than 100 gates at any singular airport.

Curiously, the A380 has much better runway performance than quite a few aircraft in this game... its 7900ft runway performance is comparable to that of Boeing 767-300ER (7565ft average), 777-200ER (roughly 7800-8000ft), and is only slightly worse than the E195AR's runway distance of 7149ft. The A380 requires less runway in this game than both variants of the 777-300, most 747-400's, and even the 767-400ER.

But yes, I do like the appeal of being the sole carrier at some airports since I actually take the time to find aircraft that have abnormally short runway requirements for their class. 767-200ER with 6400ft performance and A330-200 at 6695ft lets me dominate Hollywood-Burbank's long haul market, along with some other airports. Extending the runways would attract more people, which would inevitably bring around the spamlines.

...that said I think most airlines would reach a point where they sort of "spam" the absolute living s*** out of their main hub airports... it's just a sort of natural progression of continually adding flights and gates until you've basically controlled all of the markets, from the 600 weekly passenger long-haul routes down to the twice-weekly CRJ705 routes.

Y-you mean that I can't fly the A380 to some random jungle? What about the 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 random tourists that want to come to the middle of nowhere for no reason at all?

While I do think much of the criticism is valid, I do think it is an interesting idea. Perhaps it could be limited to only your bases, after all I am pretty sure for example has a say in the runway length in Dubai. This would for example also allow a major Irish carrier to expand Dublin's runway to accommodate larger jets and as such allow them to operate long hauls earlier.

In summary, I think it is a good idea if you are restricted to only being able to extend runways in your own bases, perhaps more criteria such as also having a terminal of a given size and perhaps even a marketshare of a specific size. In other words, you would have to be a major airline at the airport to be able, and it would be hella expensive

I personally think this is not a good idea for spamliner reasons.

100% disagree about 100 gate limit. I really enjoy building 200 gate terminals in DFW DEN and ATL and having a realistic airline. The thing that needs to be changed is how many slots a gate give you. 50 weekly slots for 7 days? thats only 7 daily departures, most airports can handle about 10-14 per day depending on the gate size. While no, I am not a spamliner, DISCLAMER: I am trying it out in R6 right now without significant results, but thats not what I am turning into, I promise. I do often flood the market of routes and lower prices, but not to spamliner levels.

I would disagree and say that most airlines operate at an average of 5-8 flights per gate. The problem is that both a CRJ200 and an A380 take up the same amount of a gate, in the real world, a crj could be at a gate for half an hour while an A380 is generally at a gate for 2 hours. The gates need to move away from slot based to a time based system. And have set turn around times for each aircraft type. But I do agree with you that sometimes 200 gates feels necessary to have a realistic number of routes and frequencies. United will have 90 gates at Denver after the gate expansion and really only have 5-6 flights per gate, some reaching 7-8, so I think a 100 gate limit is reasonable even with the current system despite my opinion on changing it to time based.

(edit) maybe only allow 200 gate terminals at hubs but then again I've seen airlines with 200 gates and a hub and some small airport (Chattanooga for example) but they only use 1 gate. It's completely and utterly ridiculous.

This is one observation I made and resulted in me not being to apply aircraft on some routes or airports
I suspect the minimum runway configuration for the B777-300 / B777-300ER is incorrect
