Chicago/Rockford cargo operations growing

ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR

ROCKFORD — Chicago/Rockford International Airport, home to a thriving UPS sorting hub, was the 19th fastest-growing airport in terms of cargo in the world and the fourth fastest-growing air cargo airport in the U.S., according to the July issue of Air Cargo World magazine and the Airports Council International.

The magazine, which has a worldwide circulation, ranked Rockford’s airport as 34th in North America and 95th in the world in terms of cargo tonnage, a combined 14.2 percent increase over last year.

That tonnage will expand as UPS opens a new $7.4 million air-freight facility this summer. The 75,000-square-foot operation, and a $25 million upgrade to the air hub, will increase from 81,000 to 100,000 the number of parcels handled per hour. Both investments will add 275 jobs to the local economy.
