What I tend to do is offer better quality services compared to my competitors. While the profit margins are technically lower, It is easier to compete with other airlines as you don't have to drop prices as much. Now you can order more aircraft and expand your airline more so you end up getting more profit overall.

If you're playing around, experimenting in the sandbox world, you can set the pay for your employees much lower by paying them less than half what the default is.  That way you can show profit quickly and get a better feel for the game without bankrupting too quickly every couple of days (in real world time)

I generally keep 2 IFS setups; one that's 100% scam-orientated and one that's maxxed out for when some random airline butts in and decides to undercut my prices.
