This may be a bit of a major change, but I think it would be very cool if you could add the ability to merge airlines. I would be kind of like shared control but where one player’s airline is completely absorbed into the other. I think it would add a lot of realism to the way airlines develop over time. You would likely set an amount of money an airline must pay to buy another based on the value of the airline being purchased. Also you could only allow airlines in the same country or airlines in countries with open sky agreements (i.e. Australia/New Zealand, EU) to merge. This would also offer a second option for those who wish to cease operations. I’m not sure you could allow airlines owned by the same person to merge...

That "allow airlines owned by the same person to merge" thing is probably just a loophole waiting to happen anyways.  If someone is on a world where there's no limit on the number of airlines you can make, they could just make a slew of airlines and merge them all together to provide practically infinite starting cash.

Maybe limit the number of airlines per player that are mergeable. If airlines owned by multiple players were to merge, some complications would arise: would the result involve shared ownership, or could one owner back out of the game without the airline going bankrupt?

I see two options:
1. You get the cash/debt (including bonds), but all leases become purchases.
2. You don't get the cash/debt (and you don't get bonds), but all leases stay the same.

However, I believe the choice should be up to the users on which method they want.

Anyway, I believe this is an amazing idea.
