My economy isn't all that awful. Everybody here is hiring... everybody and not even just McDonalds.

My economy is plagued by 49% of the population who do absolutely nothing to contribute, and the lowest labor participation rate of any developed country. 94 million Americans out of the workforce (not including those on social security or minors), and yet our president claims the unemployment rate is 5%. Must be common core math. Family s like mine making 125,000< pay over 70% of this countries taxes whilst being only about 40% percent of the income earned, yet people say the top 10% percent need to be taxed more. Seems there are a lot of people like STEV that need to get owned in an economic argument with Thomas Sowell then come back enlightened to speak on this issue logically.

dieseltu, your pursuit of jobs is very noble but why unemployment is so high is the undeniable fact that technology is replacing most jobs. Yes it may fluctuate a little due to tweaks in policy but the trend will go on that there will be fewer and fewer jobs. You are feeling the full brunt of this since you work in the steel plant. The manufacturing sector will be hit hard, only next to agricultural sectors.
I'm a businessman. Jobs are limited but business is unlimited. Also this is why I have all these free time to make liveries and templates, because I'm not in a 9-5 job. It's a common myth that you should be already rich to start your own business or start investing. But since technology has been a catalyst for businesses to grow, I was able as an undergraduate to start my business with minimal capital using my savings. And I never needed to find a job after that.
And BTW, the country where I live, unemployment is over 30%

Automation will come to such an extent where employment will no longer be a necessary tenant of society. The majority of our time would be then devoted to the arts, entertainment, and science. I don't see it coming full circle in my lifetime, but eventually practically all of humanity will be focused on accomplishing what now scientists dream about. (like legnthing our telomere) Eventually automation will change the entire scope of society, remember a robot doesn't have to be perfect just better than a human.

You even know what that is med?
Yes they protect DNA from deterioration and is directly linked to aging. I am actually connected to a company that develops technologies addressing this. Epigenetics is a huge part of the future.

i think the main reason for all our high unemployment is the fact that we have so many unskilled workers, they don't have degrees or want to work in areas that need them. They just want a job here there or anywhere. There aren't enough of those going around and more "real" in demand jobs available with less people filling them up.

I agree. We are seeing more and more of a gap in education especially in the United States. Many advocate "free" college as the solution, however I think this would only move the bar up for what employers expect and lower the standard of undergrad educations. That being said I think the answer to our problem is to adopt a Germany like public education system where a high school career is career focused. The only issue with this is that you would have big pivotal decisions being made by 8th. graders, perhaps that is where parents would step in. Also yes Epigenitics is very very promising however i do have some ethical issues with it, but even I myself find them misplaced I just can't seem to get rid of them.

1. Percentage of Americans not paying income tax, excluding minors.
2. That is the current amount of people out of the workforce. Lowest participation rate since the Carter administration.

3.Yes OBAMACARE has raped full time workers it is actually almost 2X the next highest full time to part time rate. Historically never been worse.
4. Your Dad should be paying around a 30% rate. The percentage he lies in as an income earner is the top 10% which pays 70% of this countries taxes according to the IRS.
5. World renound economist who is famous for showing how the growth of government dampens economic growth and for the decrease the opposite is true. He was liberal professor before he made the report and publicly denounced socialism in the 80s, was said to have helped the growth that was seen during the decade and helped Reagan get re-elected. Very very very famous economist.

To answer the original question:
The market is great. Took me about 9 months total to find a job ( I was in school for 7 of them, graduated this year), but I landed an AWESOME starter job in nonprofit fundraising. I work as a nonprofit fundraising director on the side, and this week I am signing a contract with a Canadian company that I hope will translate into my dream job.
Ya'll need to network. Get out there. Get that experience and push hard. You will get that job
Christ that's heartfelt for you, Ross. It's creepy.

US job market is likely the most diverse it's even been and has TONS openings and availability with a still massively growing tech sector in areas that were not normally considered tech (Alabama being a massive location for new IT growth). With a massive growing tech market and the ease of ability for small businesses to expand into the internet now-a-days through low cost means, use jobs and self employment is growing in the last 4 years. Low cost of living in bankrupt Red states is allowing for investment in them since the housing market is good to buy.
But biggest problem with people not finding a job is not that they can't, it's that simply the climate has changed on how and what they're looking for. More non-school taught skills and certifications are becoming ideal to have.

I read real stuff not stuff that tries to justify the low participation rate, like what you read.
