My problem is shading and using paint. I don't have the resources to be buying new software, and for that matter, downloading free stuff for fear of viruses. And shading never seems to be my friend. I might need to get acquainted with GIMP a bit more, but for now, I'm using paint. Hopefully, I will get better and so will you. For now, though...

Paint.Net is perfectly reputable and safe, given you download from getpaint.net

Paint.net also have a .psd extension, which I've found has come in handy. I'd recommend it.
