Just started playing recently and getting to grips with the mechanics and stuff, but just a quick question, is there any way to see which airports have routes flying to other airports before you purchase gates? The obvious solution is to fly to really obscure airports in deepest darkest Inner Mongolia to ensure a monopoly, but is there a more practical way?

Research the routes first: you'll see all the specs and competition, then when you go to add your planes you can lease and know what to expect. I like to have a second tab with a search going of reachable airports for a certain plane, then looking up routes by manually typing in airport codes in the first tab.

No. You should go to the airport's information page, and it shows you the route map of the airport (destinations served by the airport), with a graph showing percentage of traffic, airport stats, airline hub information, and route information for each individual route already served by another airline from that airport.

Stick in your parameters to the "Browse Airports". ie. Within 1300 miles of Ulaan Bator with minimum 3,500 foot runway. On this list, you'll see the "Research" button. Right click and select "Open in new tab" and then open a few, then decide which ones would fit best. It's quite efficient.
