Hi! 
Can someone please explain to me what exactly is the purpose for opening a hub? As far as the description says, I get charged double for gates for starting a hub at an airport. So what exactly are the benefits? Thanks!

Connecting traffic. If your airline flies form A-B and B-C if B is your hub, passengers can fly from A-C on your airline via your hub.

basically best way to say it is like this example
Lets say your using heathrow is your hub and you connect flights from glasgow, cardiff, manchester etc to there and then fly from heathrow to moscow then customers from the connecting airports will have access to russia which then will give you a boost in passenger numbers along the route
