Hey, I'm starting to consider building a terminal at TPA, my hub. Getting gates is an absoulte pain in a**.
Now I'd like to build a terminal, with 20 gates. I currently have 8 gates at TPA which the board requires me to get rid of. Then that will give me 12 additional gates. I'm probably going to use at least 3 or 4 of these right away, but the others will remain open until new planes are delivered.
Question 1: Do I lose the gates if I don't use them right away?
Question 2: If I can hold on to the gates without using them (and assuming they don't get taken away), do I pay the monthly charge?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Maestro
Final question, is it better to build a large terminal initially and grow into it, or build a smaller one and then expand it? Is it as costly to expand a terminal as to build a brand new one?

If u build over 35 gates, u get a 65% discount (maximum amount) on gate rental costs.. thus, it makes is useless to build 10-15 gate terminals.

For example, if i build a 15 gate terminal, i would get a 30% discount and if i built a extension later, i would continue to pay that initial gate costs, even if a built a 35 gate extension.

Thus, building bigger initial may be incur a big costs, its worth it at the end.

Also, another aspect to terminals is determining what ur needs are. U really need to take into consideration along with how much ur willing to spend.

Another reason to build big terminals to start with is that once a certain amount of terminals are built, the airport will no longer allow you to expand, limiting you to whatever gates you have.

Agreed, but the downside to that is you have now released those gates to the competition! They now have the ability to invade your routes and reduce your profit, while as before they couldn't invade your routes unless they wanted to spend the money on building a terminal themselves. Which in turn releases gates that you can buy! What a vicious circle!

Thats true. It happened to me last game.. i just keeped buying gates at Madrid and by the time i realised a terminal would be better, i had over 60 gates and it was a tough call to make to build a bigger terminal and release gates to the competition.

But at the end of the day, it comes down to the individual and what he wants. The best scenario would be releasing at little gates as possible... :D

Maybe, but getting the discount on gate costs is really worth it. Especially if you have a hub. Last round my Hub costs went from over $10M to about $1.5 after building a terminal.

Another thing to think about is having a hub and terminal at the same time - whilst you can never get rid of a terminal, it is possible to remove a hub, butif you have a terminal and hub at the same airport at the same time, you are stuck with both of them forever - I made that mistake....although as i expand its getting better.
