In a bid to create the most comprehensive European route network of any of the large alliances, Excel Alliance announced that TAP Air Portugal has become its sixth full member airline, and fourth in Europe. TAP Air Portugal has been the Iberian nation's flag carrier since its founding in 1945, providing service across Iberia, Europe  and the Americas. TAP currently boasts the largest network to Brazil of any European carrier, providing unmatched travel connections to South America's largest nation both geographically, demographically and economically; flying to Sao Paulo, Rio de Janiero, Brasilia and Campinas from bases at Lisbon and Oporto.

 

TAP's joining of the alliance gives Excel a competitive edge all four corners of Europe, filling in a significant gap in Southwestern Europe not filled by BMI, SAS or Alcielo. TAP also opens up the South American market to Excel member airlines as well as their customers, and Excel is looking to expand its position with additional members in the Americas. TAP currently has codesharing connections with SAS through Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen; Alcielo through Rome, British Midland and Atlantic Air through London-Heathrow, and Oceanic Airlines through New York-Kennedy.
