After almost a year of discussion between Excel, British regulatory authorities, and London based Atlantic Air, the latter party has taken a controlling stake in British Midland Airways, one of Britain's largest airlines. The deal includes the necessary framework for a partnership between the two airlines, with Atlantic Air gaining codeshares on regional European flights, and British Midland codesharing on Atlantic Air's long haul network. The two are expected to move into the same terminal at London-Heathrow Airport soon.
Another product of this deal is British Midland's newfound member status within Excel Alliance, strengthening out already strong European network of carriers, complementing SAS and Alcielo with greater service within Western Europe. British Midland is one of Europe's more mature and respected carriers, flying a venerable fleet of Douglas DC-9 jetliners from its main base at London-Heathrow. This gives Excel premier access to all three of the world's great financial hubs - New York, London and Tokyo, making the alliance the premier choice for the globetrotting businessman.
