Tokyo, Japan

18 March, 1980

Today, Japanese flag carrier Nippon Airways took a significant step towards the future by selecting the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 for its future wide-body needs. The three engine aircraft is the current forefront of aviation, and are to be powered by Pratt and Whitney jets, offering commonality with the rest of Nippon's fleet, as well as unrivaled in-flight efficiency. The cabin is to be configured in modern wide-body style with eighteen Nippon One Class chairs up front, with two-hundred and eighty Nippon Traveller Class seats occupying the rear. The latest in in-flight entertainment and service options are to be equipped, including full cabin movie projector screens, and next-generation food service equipment to make for a luxurious passenger experience.

The aircraft are to be used on trial flights within Japan, most notably Tokyo to Osaka and Sapporo, Nippon's biggest routes. Later deliveries are to base aircraft in Japan's population centres, serving high-demand domestic routes, before moving on to intra-Asia routes to China, Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines. The DC-10 will strengthen Nippon's position as one of Asia's leading air carriers.
