That depends. You have never been charged for 5 star food in economy because they don't have 5 star food in economy. They have 1-2 star food, or maybe 3 at the very most. My food is basically first class celebrity chef Emirates food delivered to economy class, without having to buy a fist class suite. I think it is reasonable to charge that amount if the food is the very best food.

I have flew Turkish and Swiss, I haven't had to pay for meals and I would say the food would be 3*-5*, even in economy, that's realistic quality for you there. now lets compare that to my Thomson flights, where food had to be payed for. It was about £7 (or about $14) for something on AE probably rated as 1/2* so paying anymore I would consider as spam, as even an LCC doesn't cost that much to eat and drink on board.

Turkish and Swiss are in the same situation as the $45 for 5* AE food. The main difference is they can build that cost into the price of the ticket, which Turk and Swiss did, instead of charging it as a separate item like you must in AE.

Daytonanerd, if you think your getting that crap (wether it be last week's reheated dry piece of chicken you would feel bad serving to your dog, or a fine 5* dinner) for FREE you need to go to the nearest mental hospital and check yourself in. Nothing in business and this world is free. Especially in aviation.

yeah what channy said. the food on most/some carriers (depending on where you are) are served either complimentary or at an extra cost. complimentary =/= free.

Look, guys, as long as AE is a game that only flirts with realism, the ScamIFS is going to be prevalent. Hell, I use it in the first few months of the game to get enough cash to get a decent fleet going. Personally, after I can stay in the black without ScamIFS I get rid of it because I like the challenge of it, and also because airline reputation means more to me than total valuation.

Right now in R3 there are airlines valued at several billion dollars. Mine's only valued at just over $500mil. BUT - my airline is top-ranked on reputation without spamming other carriers' routes or engaging in price wars. It's the way I like to play the game. Obviously other folks like to play antagonistically; that's their prerogative until or unless Yuxi et al decide it's against the spirit of the thing.

At some point of AE's evolution I'd love to see the ScamIFS and other loopholes closed to discourage spammers and scalawags. But this being the Internet, you're never going to get rid of them completely, and let's be honest - that's pretty realistic too. Southwest Airlines didn't get to where it was by wearing halos, you know. ;) Having said that, though, a game AI which behaves more realistically (and doesn't buy $75 dinners made up of pipe cleaners and navel lint) would help improve the competitive balance between quality and affordability.
