I have a hub at SFO, and I am a relatively new airline. I figured it would make sense to have a route to LAX. I started it with 757-200s and I could not make anything with the fares being so low. Is there an airplane better at these extremely low margin routes or is it just not worth my time at all?

Busy routes like SFO-LAX are never good to start off on. Base yourself in small-medium airports and stick to those. Once you grow past say 500mil, you can think about expanding.

If the route is heavily over-served with low fares, why would it make sense?

Because it is a very large airport, with a high demand, very close to SFO......that is why it makes sense.
