On 22 October 2008, Airbus and Croatia Airways announced the order of four additional 132-seat A319 aircraft for deliveries in 2013.

On 23 May 2011, Croatia Airways and maintenance partner Lufthansa announced the debut of new Recaro slimline economy class seating for retrofitting into select A320 family aircraft from summer 2012. The new layout would add two more rows of passenger capacity in each cabin.

In November 2012, the Croatian government announced that it would provide 800 million kuna (roughly 136 million US dollars) for Croatia Airways to become more cost-effective from 2013 onwards, after accumulating losses for several years. In accordance with a new restructuring plan imposed by the state, the airline would lay off up to ten percent of its workforce within two years in addition to seeking a strategic investor.

By January 2013, the airline's three ATRs were retired and replaced by Bombardier Dash 8 Q400s after nearly 12 years in service. The first of six ordered aircraft, Primorje, was delivered in September 2012.

In October 2017, Croatia Airways returned its first pair of A330s back to SAPSA after signing a new lease in September for two younger aircraft of the same type with Pembroke Group Limited. In addition to introducing a new livery, the two Pembroke A330s sport a lower-density cabin configuration with five fewer seats in business class and 57 fewer seats in economy class. To compensate for their reduced passenger capacity, the airline increased frequencies on its transatlantic routes to New York and Toronto with the addition of a fourth weekly flight to both destinations.

In February 2018, the airline introduced the long-range Airbus A321LR to the fleet, making its debut on the new Zagreb-Dubai route that was launched on the same day. Two more A321LRs would be delivered in April and May that year, enabling the future launch of summer routes from Dubrovnik to New York and Zagreb to Pittsburgh, the latter of which is home to the largest Croatian diaspora in North America.

In February 2020, Podgorica and Tirana were announced as two new seasonal destinations scheduled for launch in early May.
