Alaskan Star operated the DC-9-40 from 1968 until 2010, although between 1990 and 2010 they were operated as freighters for North Star Cargo. They were replaced in passenger service by the 737-300, and in cargo operations by the 737-700F. N419AS (seen here in the 1991-2003 livery) was retired in 2009 after operating as a fuel tanker in Alaska for the last ten years of its lifespan. The DC-9-40 only had one major accident in its operating history with Alaska Star, a fatal crash in 1970 while on approach to Juneau on a foggy morning while operating flight 17.
