TAAS was founded in 1932 as a Crown corporation by the Australian government to deliver mail to hard to reach places; by 1958 it had a fleet of 16 Douglas DC-6 aircraft, delivering cargo and passengers across Australia. Competition from new upstart airlines is forcing TAAS to upgrade the fleet, with new Boeing 707 aircraft coming online in 1959, slowly bringing the piston engine era to an end.
