18th November 1999
GMI has today revealed that its Greek carrier Hellenic is to resume operations on
1st December 1999 with two ex-IndiGo Airbus A320-200 aircraft on lease from ILFC.
Hellenic had ceased operations on 28th July 1999 after numerous incidents with its fleet
of ageing regional Yakovlev 40 aircraft and Boeing 737 Classic aircraft. The final 'killer'
incident was when a Boeing 737-400 aircraft suffered from a dual engine failure shortly
after take-off, leading to the aircraft having to land on an abandoned airstrip near Athens,
with the failure due to a major design floor with the CFM engines.
As a result of the consistent issues with the Yakovlev & 737 family as well as CFM engines,
the new Hellenic fleet will consist of:
Bombardier Q400 aircraft to replace the Yak-40
Airbus A320/321 aircraft to replace the B733/4
Plus, the Airbus aircraft are to be fitted with IAE V2500 engines rather than CFM.
Hellenic currently has orders for:
18 Bombardier Q400 - 70Y
8 Airbus A321-200 - 198Y
These aircraft are to be fully owned and will compliment the current fleet of two
Airbus A320-200 - 162Y
