Denali Air Cargo was formed as a joint venture between Thunderbird Air Transport and GECAS and started operations in 1994. The fleet in 1996 consisted of Boeing 747-100s and 747-200s. In 1999, after the collapse of Thunderbird Air Transport, the remainder of the company was bought out by GECAS. In 2000, the company took delivery of its first Boeing 747-400F.

In late 2002, Denali Air Cargo was acquired by Raines Air and became a subsidiary of the company. In October 2006, DHL took a 49% stake in Denali and the company became a major courier for DHL. A Denali 747 was one of the first aircraft to report the collision of ASAS Flight 878. From 2014 onwards, the airline began taking delivery of 747-8Fs and 767-300Fs that would operate for DHL.

As of 2022, the airline is still owned by Raines Air Systems (51%) and has 736 employees.
