Lockheed L 1049G

Lockheed L 1049G

South African's propeller liner of choice, the Lockheed Starliner These served African and European destinations from both Cape Town and Johannesburg, before being replaced in the 1970s by Boeing 727 aircraft. They were replaced on their long range routes by both VC10 and 707 aircraft.

The livery was first used in 1955, and marked a departure away from the bright colours that preceded it; moving to a higher class, more subdued (read: British) look to differentiate itself from it's competitors.
