In 1976, British Global Airlines was looking to expand its Concorde service to its longer routes to save businessmen even more time and increase the airline’s profits. The airline partnered with Air Hongkong to begin services to Hong Kong via. Bahrain along the dubbed "Oriental Express." After negotiating with the relevant authorities, flights began in 1978, but stopped after only five flights due to India and Saudi Arabia revoking overflight permits. Both aviation authorities cited damage to the agriculture and livestock industries, however, India reportedly used the permit as leverage for state-owned carrier Indian National Airlines to get access to additional Heathrow slots.
Flights began again in 1980, after flight routes were re-adjusted, however the route only continued for a few more months after poor load factors caused the airline to shut it down. The BGA Concorde would be a yearly visitor to Hong Kong throughout the 80s and 90s, however, the Air Hongkong livery was taken off following the cessation of its services in 1981.
