#262098 Why undercutting other airlines is a bad idea

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 27 January 2018 - 11:03 PM in New Players and Questions

When we were splitting the demand between three airlines, and we kept economy prices at $1750...

Then some kid comes in with 58x 737-800 flights a week, with no IFE nor IFS but the ticket is $500...

Yeah, it just has a way of tearing apart a market.

Thing is... all of the airlines that I observed doing this have under 500M value and under 100 aircraft.

#262033 Why undercutting other airlines is a bad idea

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 27 January 2018 - 03:14 PM in New Players and Questions

So you see a juicy route with 2500 demand and you want to get a share of the candy, right? Undercutting other airlines on such routes might make you money for a week or so in-game, but once other airlines find out that you lowered your ticket prices to $500 when they are charging $750, they will also lower their fares. You will be tempted to lower your prices again to $300, only to find 100% passenger load in all classes but you are losing money. You want to raise it back, but it is too late, as the other airlines on the route also lowered their prices to $300. Now nobody is making a profit, and passengers are not willing to pay $750 for the route again because one scamline is flying the route for $250.

#264654 What’s the perfect IFS?

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 23 February 2018 - 01:44 AM in New Players and Questions

I use a free 5-star IFE that loses money for my airline with a scam IFS that earns money for my airline, and the IFS earns more than the IFE does but still maintains a relatively high IFS reputation.

If you are a scamline, charge max price for the worst products. If you are looking for quality, have zero charge on the highest quality products.

#268609 what would be the easiest country to operate out of?

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 23 May 2018 - 09:56 PM in New Players and Questions

America, there are some very obscure airports that only very few people operate to, such as

-LaGuardia (takes some knowledge of geography and a rather early start)

-Burbank (its also LA, ya know?)

-Chicago Midway

-Charlotte (sometimes)

-Tampa

-Clearwater

-Spokane

-San Juan, Oakland, and San Diego (sometimes)

-Sacramento

-San Antonio

-Indianapolis

-Greensboro/Durham

-Nashville

-Memphis

-Richmond

-Louisville/Cincinnati/Columbus/Cleveland (all in a nice straight line)

-Des Moines

-Kansas City

-St. Louis

Just pull out google maps and do a quick scan.

#264502 What is your favorite aircraft in the game?

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 21 February 2018 - 12:04 AM in General AE Discussion

Mine is clearly the Boeing 757-200/-300, with a generous max range and capacity while still being small enough to operate to smaller airports, and being cheaper than widebodies and some narrowbodies. Nothing really comes close to replacing it until the 737-900ER or the A321NEO, both of which lack the capacity of the 757.

#264405 What is a good profit-to-value ratio?

Yeah, sorry for bad wording. 3% profit margin sounds good for late-game, but the profit margin slowly fall once you start getting into late-game? I'm just starting out, and my monthly profit margin is at 31.9% right now, which kind of freaks me out.

#262139 What do you think is the hardest country to operate out of?

If they were to build an airport in the Vatican, it might as well be a RC port. Even still, that might be too big.

#268480 Traffic & maintenance restrictions

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 20 May 2018 - 11:27 PM in Suggestions and Feature Requests

Physical traffic restrictions at airports

The average airliner uses roughly 1 minute for its takeoff roll. Add another 9 minutes for wake turbulence to disperse, and add on another 5 minutes due to other factors (weather, someone spilling the coffee all over ATC, late passengers, etc) and we get 672 departures/week. However, landings take much longer, so we can use the rather conservative rate of 1 arrival/departure every 15 minutes, which means the maximum amount of flights that a single airline can operate to an airport with 1 runway per week would be 336.

Why have independent restrictions for all airlines?

http://www.airline-e.../8161-atnt71eb/

Any more questions needed?

Passenger movement at connecting airports should also be limited, unless we are willing to accept that thousands (or millions) of passengers can disembark an aircraft, run through the terminal, which is many times past full capacity, due to the spam-like nature of some airlines, and board their connecting flight, without completely destroying the airport in a massive stampede that never ceases due to the constant flights.

Of course, 336 flight cycles/week is more than enough for most airlines, it would at least somewhat restrict the most extreme spamlines from earning a boatload of money from 30 mile hops. This is where the next set of restrictions would come in:

Maintenance rates grow exponentially with use

Let's all face it: an aircraft that flies for 19 hours in a 20 hour day would break down incredibly quickly. The maintenance costs of an aircraft should be based both on aircraft age but also aircraft usage. An airline that operates planes for 10 hours a day would be rewarded with lower maintenance costs than the airline that runs its planes for 19.98 hours a day.

The number of mechanics an airline has should also affect maintenance costs, but this should be generally conservative except for 2 cases:

-Aircraft are running over 18 hours a day

-Mechanic reserves are under 10%

Simply put, a mechanic cannot service hundreds of aircraft a day. And yes I know that mechanic numbers rise as your airline gets larger, but we have to be somewhat realistic here.

#261941 Tips for New Players

10. When you are around 5-7 days from the end of a month, STOP YOUR SPENDING AND JUST SAVE UP UNTIL THE MONTH END. Fuel costs, maintenance, and aircraft/gate leasing all come within a very short span of time, and having a cushion is always better than going into the negatives.

#261939 Tips for New Players

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 26 January 2018 - 02:58 AM in New Players and Questions

Okay - so this might sound like it contradicts nearly EVERYTHING on this post, but you can try it, and it worked for me (at least for now)

1. Get 757s if available. You can use them on nearly every type of route. Use 1 first class seat to every 7 business class seats, and 3-4 first class seats for a 757 should do. Fill up first class and business class, and when checking economy class, do 10 less seats than max capacity. This gives you good reputation.

2. Join the largest alliance possible. If there are two alliances that are very close, take a look at the two and choose the one with the most airlines on top 20.

3. Small airports. Google maps. Wikipedia.

4. SPAM your 757s on transcontinental routes from small airports in large cities.

5. Add "feeder" flights that are about 1-2 hours from your "main" airports (i.e. if you do Burbank-Hollywood > Charlotte, do flights from Burbank to El Paso and Charlotte to Durham or Savannah.)

6. IFE and IFS: as generous as you can be IF AND ONLY IF YOU ARE JOINING A "legacy" GAME. YOU WILL NEVER CATCH UP TO AN AIRLINE WORTH BILLIONS/TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS, BUT REPUTATION WILL ALLOW YOU TO COMPETE ON A DIFFERENT PLAYING FIELD. Disregard if you are in a "new" world.

7. Set up 3 "hubs" (but don't make them hubs) on the East coast (small airports near large cities). Set up 3 "hubs" on the West Coast (small airports). Connect them with transcontinental flights.

8. Once you start hitting 50M DOP or so, you can start being more aggressive. Don't forget that larger airlines are making 500M+ DOP, so you cannot be too aggressive.

9. Little tip regarding A330-300 and A340-300: A330-300 is more expensive, burns more fuel, has less range, but the same seating and speed as the A340-300. A340-300 has a longer turnaround time (75 v.s. 90 minutes).

#259503 Tips for New Players

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 12 January 2018 - 04:13 AM in New Players and Questions

I recommend on using the Internet and looking up airports that are located in major cities but have runways short enough to where larger airlines cannot 747 spam your routes or smaller airports that are located in major cities but have a different name than the city, such as Burbank-Hollywood Airport, which is located in Los Angeles.

Oh yeah, leasing aircraft until around 500M is never a bad idea. Also let the game run every now and then, and let your money build up over time. It is never a bad idea to have a large "cushion" just in case.

#259481 This might be worse than $1 spamlining:

Posted by mastacheifa118 on 12 January 2018 - 01:05 AM in New Players and Questions

Placing an order so large that the aircraft producer would be making aircraft even after the world will reset, although the game itself is still over 10 years from the world reset. Please don't over-saturate an aircraft producer to the point where no other airlines can purchase new aircraft from them.
