I saw this airline: http://world14.airli....php?player=678 and thought that with the number of minors and people aged younger than 12 or 13 on AE that it is disgusting.

I think we should introduce a ban on rude words as airline names in AE...

What do people think about this?

To me this is obvious. I say do it.

I'll play devil's advocate here. I've seen censors do such horrible things to people's text as to undermine the marginal value they add. For example, suppose I wanted to operate a Hancock Airlines out of PHL...I would be stuck with a name of Han**** Airlines. My experience is that the intrigue generated by the censor's edits causes people's minds to wander to far worse language that what was originally present. After all, it's not like this is the first exposure some kid has had to the word--even at 11 or 12. I know I fully understood the meaning of the word in question at the age of 10. Presumably they do go to school. It's a bit of a stretch to say we should censor beyond what a school would!

Furthermore, there are very few (if more than this single instance) examples of any abuse. I would guess a simple PM to a mod for every abuse would be less overall work for the dev/mod staff than a censor.

It would be nice to put a character limit on airline names. It's really annoying when the pie graph just shows a 4 pixel mess next to airlines names off the edge of the chart.

I'm with Rotary.

Censoring I think often does lead to much worse thoughts than originally present and/or creates nasty thoughts out of nothing. There are obviously some youngsters that will laugh at Hancock, but I imagine the vast majority wouldn't notice there is another word within Hancock unless it was censored out. It's akin to pointing out the possible double entendre of Fast Fudgers to everyone on AirlineEmpires...

I think that there should be at least some kind of restriction on what you can name your airline (like you cant name your airline Fast as F*** Airlines, or anything offensive to an ethnic group like Muslim Terrorists 9/11 Airlines). But this ban shouldnt include things like Hancock Airlines or Fast Fudgers because it's not blatantly being suggestive.

I'm not sure, but I believe the airline had been renamed - looking at the history shows that it was named something worse.

But no, there's no need for automatic censorship - that's what the staff is for.

I agree that the occurance of offensive names on AE is rare enough that having a filter would do more harm than good (han**** or ****tail for example, leading people to think about it when they otherwise would not).

Also, word filters are easy to circumvent and would not catch offensive but non-swear names (we've had some before that I won't mention). It's not going to make the (already rare) problem go away.

Being 12, I may as well add my opinion on the matter.
Firstly, to me, that airline name, (Pre-censored) just looks idiotic, and the owner of it clearly wants attention. (Well, he got some).
Secondly, I have known the meaning of the word in question since I was 7 or 8. There were few people I knew who didn't know. There is definitely no-one I know who's offended by it right now.
Therefore there is no need for a direct censor, but there's probably a few people who'd be offended by such a name, so a system where potentially offensive names are flagged by the system to be checked might be the best idea.

It's a tad crude, but nothing to get in a tizzy over.

Who cares what somebody names their airline? It's nothing to get worked up over, trust me, if my country cared about censorship we wouldn't have Miley Cyrus. Caring about what an airline is named is just a waste of your time, go gripe about the environment or human rights, something that actually matters.

As of now we've spent more time debating the merits of censorship than actually resolving the offensive name that comes up every few months.

Would a "report player" button be better?
And a thing in the rules stating that any airline named in a rude or offensive manner will be deleted?
