Well, mergers I think are possible, but it's not a option in the game (its more of those things that you buy planes from the other airline). The way it usually works is that you offer to buy out an airline (or you ask a airline to buy you out). After that, the person that is selling their airline will send you the planes induvidually(using the private aircraft sale option) . As far as Co-Ops go, alliances are the way to go. Plenty out there you can join.

Are the alliances like real wolrd alliances i.e. everyone has a specific territory?

It depends, there you can post your interest for looking at a alliance in the alliances forum. Or you can find someone that is in a alliance and ask them what you need to join. As far as turf goes, some alliance don't usually allow you to have your base/hub in the same city as another member. Others don't mind it (like the one I'm in, its Wings900 Alliance.)

Be careful about the merging idea though, I got banned last game for merging with another airline, they sold me all their aircraft in private at cost - 500k and the game reset my account because it was "Cheating". I agree that when people sell their aircraft at 50% value, it deserves banning if it is on the private market, but, nevertheless I still believe that bots scanning the databases cannot make logical decisions where a human could.
