what if they never invented the steamboat, would we be still sailing across the globe? probably yes (for both)

be interesting though to see what both aircraft and ships would look like. being a sailor-of-sorts (i volunteer on a liberty ship, surely i must classify as a sailor to some degree?) i rather like the idea of handling the lines that drop the sails, and using manpower to hoist the anchor rather than a steam winch.
as for prop aircraft, i also like the idea of a double decker aircraft with 20 odd engines mounted on half a dozen wings, or even worse a hindenburg/spruce goose hybrid!

If they never invented the engine we would still be riding on carts and horses, and big wooden boats. Never mind flying.

could have made a nuclear engine and airfare would be cheaper, but every time there was a crash, well...
