Depends on your plans, preferences and the time period. When you're starting and don't have much cash, planes like the MD-81 are half the cost to lease as a B737 or A320. In the earlier periods, planes like the Dassault Mercure are a good cheap starter. Eventually you can replace those types with the more fuel efficient (and more expensive) options.

For the bigger planes, the A330-300 is my favourite although the A340-300 is half the cost and does the same thing. The B777-300 and B747-8 both have good fuel/pax ratios, meaning they're very good money makers. And then of course, the A380 is the ultimate money making machine.

If you have a real-world appreciation for the aircraft and understand their purpose (long haul, short haul, lean routes, regional, etc), then you can have fun with just about any type. What are your favourites?

True, it depends on what your doing, because some planes are better than others.

Pretty much what Airboss777 says. Basically low purchase price for the number of seats and low fuel burn. Applies from props, all the way to the A380.

You can trade off increased fuel burn with low purchase price to an extent. Tu-204/214 and IL96-400 are great examples. You really start to notice the fuel cost with the MD-11s though, and they're worth replacing after you're done with rapid expansion mode.

Another factor is minimum runway lengths. The A343 is generally superior to the A333 in-game but I switch to the latter once I run out of long runway airports. Same goes for the 773 then switching to 772s later on.

I usually use the CRJ-100/200 planes, and they are quite good. They can do good regional short distance flights. If you go transatlantic or 2000-3000 miles, B737 is nice.

I like the 737 family as you’ll basically get a direct replacement in each generation. The MD-80 is annoying because it fits between the 737-700 and 737-800 or a320 and a319 which makes it harder to replace. And you’ll need to do this eventually as the MD-80 goes out of production in 1999.

I generally do not replace aircraft, also, the best plane for me is the TU-114, or the mercure.
