Hello all,

With summer (and lucky you, maybe even a holiday) just around the corner, why not launch a good old challenge? No prize, no jury, just some good old livery creation with a theme : tropical summer.

It can be a regular tropical themed livery (like Hawaiian or Air Tahiti Nui), or a special livery, or whatever you deem good, I'm not your mom.

If you have a design to submit, just post it here, maybe even with a little background or some explanations regarding your creation process, inspiration etc.

No rules, but please use common sense, and feel free to post constructive criticism on others' work.

Let us feel the summer vibes!

Sure, I'm saddened that this hasn't met success and that arguably all replies have been s**t, but I'm convinced that once someone proposes something more people will follow, so please do so, if you have any design you'd like to submit :-)

We've seen someone post a JAL Reso'Cha 747 in the gallery, this is precisely what I had in mind!

Ok, I'll try to come up with something, and I hope it doesn't end up being the only (real) submission...

I would've submitted something (the Funkliner) had I remembered this was here! Now I feel bad for forgetting about this.

I don't plan on releasing another special livery until the 2019 - 2020 American football season kicks off. That one is ready, but it's not exactly summer themed... So if it's okay, may I just submit the SunWest Funkliner stuff here?

Airline - Seychellen

Aircraft - Boeing 787-9 | S7-WFP

Delivered to Seychellen, 2017

Livery - Standard 2015

Country - Seychelles

This is basically a concept for a Seychelles-based carrier, which I assume is obvious. I used the Red Fody, native to the Seychelles as well as Reunion, Madagascar, and other islands in the region. The rear fuselage/tail design is based on what's basically a bunch of jungle quotes. I also used the Red Fody on the title and next to the two entry doors. Honestly, it didn't turn out as well as I thought - the ferns are too 'pattern-y', so I'd prefer to redo them again, replacing the tiny realistic detail with more cartoonish large leaves, plus it contrasts with the 3D effects on the bird. There will be a version two at some point, but I'll leave this here for now.

I would really love to hear any suggestions for this. ^_^

I was inspired by the colors and waves from the Maldivian scenery, so I tried to translate that into the design.

I knew that I wanted to definitely include some kind of depiction of the ocean, a Maldivian symbol, and a representation of its island-nation vibes, so I got heavily influenced by HiFly's A380 and Air Pacific's special Fiji liveries.

While creating the waves for the fuselage, I remained cautious about its design as I didn't want it to feel cheap, tacky, or "cartoonish" in any way because it plays such a critical role in not only the brand aesthetic, but in Maldivian culture altogether.

Airline - Trans Pacific Cargo

Aircraft - Boeing 747-400ERF | N245TP

Delivered to MidAmerican 2003, acquired by TPC in 2010. Named "Leilani"

Livery - Standard since 1993

Country - USA/Territory of Guam/Micronesia

Trans Pacific Cargo was founded in 1993 to move cargo across the Pacific islands after Vanguard Airlines' Cargo subsidiary was shut down. With grant money from various government entities in the region, as well as private funding, Trans Pacific Cargo was born. Originally operating a single 727-200 freighter and a dabble of other aircraft throughout its history, the airline has since expanded to a fleet of 12 modern 747-400ERFs, 3 767-200Fs, 2 757-200Fs, as well as Embraer 120 Freighters and Cessna Grand Caravans. The airline operates bases in Guam (HQ), Saipan, Honolulu, and Los Angeles and serves every corner of the Pacific.

I came up with the idea for this carrier after deciding what I wanted to do with Vanguard Cargo (and Micronesia Cargo). However I didn't want to leave the region hanging. My top inspirations for this design were Air Pacific, as well as Cargolux. I went with vibrant sunset colors because that's one of the more prominent things I think about when I think of the region. I also went with something that has an old look to it that could still make it in today's world. Who knows, maybe there's a next-gen livery in this airlines future, on a 747-8F :P

Seychellen International Airways

Bringing Creole To The World

Aircraft - Airbus A320-214SL
Registration - S7-MHE

Name - Mahe
Delivered - 2012

Seychellen International Airways was founded in 1974 as Seychelles Airways, in 1979 Seychelles Airways only operated 2 DC-9-30s and 4 DHC 6-300s. The DC-9-30s would fly until 1988 when they were replaced 3 new B737-400 classics, the DHC 6-300s where replaced in 2010 by Viking Air's DHC 6-400s. Today in 2019 Seychellen operates 4 A320-214s, 1 A320-271N, 2 A330-200s and 6 DHC 6-400s. Seychellen operates in and out of Mahe Island International Airport.

Now I created Seychellen simply because I'm from the Seychelles and only returned from my holiday there last Sunday during my 4 weeks holiday I took notes of the landscape and nature, everyday after a day out I would open up Photoshop and begin work on the airline. This is the 25th version I've done so far and it may go up until I'm satisfied with it.

Woah that's epic! Kind of 'overdone' but in a really good way that fits the location.

I know I already posted this on the gallery, but I felt it was appropriate as it fits the theme and people seem to be interested in the creative process of others.

'Funkliner' Special Livery

--

In April of 2018, SunWest launched a massive advertising campaign titled “#GetFunked”. Artists and enthusiasts were challenged to create a funky livery as part of this campaign. The winner would receive $15,000 USD, and their submission would be painted on one of the airline’s planes.

The winner was announced in May 2018, and by popular demand, N420PH was chosen as the aircraft to be painted. 420PH, now nick-named the Funkliner, was rolled out in July, sporting the winning livery. Inside, the cabin bulkheads feature patterns inspired by those seen on the exterior, items that carry the same theme, and multi-colored seats. The plane has been used in many online and TV commercials since its debut, and continues to serve thousands of passengers on a daily basis.

--

So I came up with this idea immediately before I was going to release the Jetaway A220 ad while vacationing in Florida. It was partly inspired by a Eurowings ad featuring an Airbus A320 wearing a giant-sized pair of sunglasses, and PSA's livery (Coincidentally, I had flown on the PSA Retrojet only a few days before). The original concept for this was called the EmoJet series. I was going to make four - all based on Emoji's - one with sunglasses, one with heart eyes, one laughing, and one with a normal smiley face.

The first one I did was the sunglasses one, because I already knew exactly how I was going to execute it. I finished that, but quickly realized that cockpit windows exist, and that doing any other emoji-themed aircraft would be extremely difficult and wouldn't look good no matter how I tried to execute it. So I settled on sticking with the sunglasses one and adding more emoji's down the side.

It was atrocious.
Even by my standards.

So I put it on hold while I worked with the A220, and at some point I thought about how funky-looking it was. (Hence the Funkliner.) And that's when I realized that I should make it a one-off livery with summer-themed colors and designs, and make it as funky as possible. I got advice from a friend (who is an artist, (thank you!)) and re-worked the design several times until I was satisfied with the diversity in colors, designs, and funky-ness. I also checked that the sunglasses wouldn't look too awkward head-on (although, inevitably, they are still quite awkward). The whole project took me about 8 hours over the course of two or three days. It was easily one of the funnest projects I've worked on, and one that I am extremely proud of.

--

It's designed to steal your attention - make your head snap towards it as soon as you see it in your peripheral. It's especially geared towards millennials and Gen-Z. Its diverse colors and designs are supposed to invoke a feeling of warmth, excitement, and summer. The forward fuselage designs are partially inspired by patterns seen in the South-Western U.S., while mid-fuselage and empennage designs are more inspired by tacky tourist T-shirts, Hawaii, Florida, and the Ocean.

It features several smaller details missing from previous SunWest uploads - such as the WiFi On-Board sign (Immediately aft of the main door) and the #GetFunked marketing slogan (on the sunglasses).

--

I had meant to upload this here but forgot about it until the troll uploaded his thing. By that point I didn't think anyone else would be interested in this anymore, and I didn't want to plug this too much.

But yeah, that's it! :)

Hi guys,

Thank you all for your submissions, everything is great!

This is in no way a contest of any sort, but here's some (i hope helpful) feedback on what has been published so far:

I really like the use of the bird, especially the small ones just at the doors, that's a great idea! I'd concur though with your own criticism about the palm leaves, some more "cartoonish" ones might be of better render.

Well, this is awesome, I really love the idea and the execution. It does remind me of the Hifly A380, but even more so if their A330-200 actually, which is in no way a bad source of inspiration in my opinion! The fuselage looks great, the tail too, I'll admit that bird is not the first thing that springs to my mind when thinking about the Maldives, but it works really well! The only thing that are a bit off are the colours of the engine & winglets I think, the shades of blue are a bit dull, maybe a more vibrant one could do?
And that reminds me that I reworked my A330neo template, I'll have to post it as this is the older version.

Well I have nothing to add to that, this is exactly what I had in mind when I launched this challenge, though it's even better to see it for a cargo airline, as we don't get many of those! The colours are very Air Pacific (which again is a great source of inspiration in my opinion).

I remember some of the older versions of that airline, what progress has bee done! I love this version! I might suggest, since you've used different colours on the tail, to add the gold of the flag to that, as I think it would balance it out even more. Also I love that every colour on the tail has a different pattern to it, a bit like Air Malta. Maybe the door outline could benefit from being the regular grey, as the way it is now make the whole think look really busy.

Wow, this is great! I love how it's playful and cartoonish, it looks great. I hadn't come across it in the gallery, thanks for posting it on here!

I may suggest to enlarge just a bit the sunglasses at the front to make them stand out more, and maybe have them an even darker shade of grey or even full black.

Thank you all for these great liveries, keep them coming! :)
