I did try, a few times with a few groups of people and just on my own, to get an AE reboot off the ground and the conclusion ended up being the same: Folks with not enough time on their hands to do what is essentially close to a full time job.
Now if y'all do want this, and my personal experience demonstrates the answer to that is "not really", let me lay out exactly what needs to happen:
1. You'll need to contact Yuxi, who is somewhat active, and Miller22, who is MIA. Assuming you can contact the both of them you'll need to:
2. Acquire the AE4 code, which is a complete rebuild from AE3 and before. Which means you'll need to:
3. Pick up where somebody else left off, which isn't even close to as easy as it sounds. I've got to make modifications to JavaScript code at work pretty frequently and I have a tough time essentially getting into another persons mind and figuring out their work and logic flow. Then after this you can:
4. Finish the code get it sent through alpha and beta testing, work out the bugs, then do all of the web side related work.
Assuming none of these things can be done you have to:
5. Write the code for a large and complex business simulator. Sure it ain't programming for a AAA video game, but for a person or a small team that's hours and hours of their lives dedicated to just this project. That includes coming up with features, then figuring out how those features will interact with one another, writing code, etc.
In short: a full time job as a small time video game developer. In AE's case unpaid work plus the cost to run the servers. And I've already got a full time job that doesn't cost me money to do.
Now you can sit there saying I haven't thought this through because I have. Extensively. If you want I can scan in some flow charts for features integration in my notebook, or some of the other work I've done. When I said I stopped working on this project because this websites community, this is what I was referring to.
Now if you guys can find a guy with the skills and background to code a game and run the website, pro bono, by all means I encourage it. But that's simply the lay of the land: this ain't a small side project for some guy, it's a pretty sizable job which requires a pretty sizable chunk of time and resources. And to you I can only say good luck and Godspeed.
