Great job Singapore indeed! I wonder what their education system is like? "Old-school" or western-style "Active learning"?

Great job Singapore indeed! I wonder what their education system is like? "Old-school" or western-style "Active learning"?

Our education starts with preschool (nursery & kindergarten), then onto Primary School (7-12year old), where at 12 students are required to take a national examination which decides which Secondary School (13 to 16/17 depending on the stream you're in take) they'll go to. At age 16, they'll take the GCE O'levels examinations (by Cambridge), which is an important exam, because it helps decide the path you're going to take in the future.

Generally, I wouldn't call Singapore's education system "old-school" or western-style, it used to be all about academics and grades (there are still lots of parents who has this selfish attitude, also known as "kiasu"), but now the government is trying to change the education system's strategy where life skills and holistic development are more focused, compared to grades, though I personally don't feel it's working in the "kiasu" society we have here in Singapore. :/

Also, I should mention Singapore has one of the most stressful education system in the world, not as worse as South Korea though. :P We'll usually start school at 7 in the morning, and end at around 2.30 in the afternoon, although on some days (2-4) of the week all students are required to participate in a Co-Curricular Activity, which ends at around 6.30 in the evening. Basically 12-13 hours of the day is used for school (including transportation). :( Not to mention homework.  -_-

Gosh, sounds old-school Asian to me! Nor wonder they produce the academic results though. Thanks for the detailed insight.
