I'm having a go at R1 and R0 and I was wondering which jet I should use to enter the jet age? Should i buy the DC-8 or the 707 or something else? your thoughts are greatly appreciated

707
All the early jets are gas guzzlers, but some are worse than others. A quick way to compare them is to divide the fuel flow figure (the lowest one, if there are multiple engine options) by the default maximum number of seats. A result between 125 - 150 is normal for that period. Anything over 150 is a bit more scary but can still make money. Anything over 200 should be avoided.
The B707-200B/C was the industry standard at the time, whilst the DC-8-50 will have the best range for the early jets.
Thank You for that handy tip.
707-200 my ass. Only if you want to go bankrupt, pick the 320B, which is much better, size and efficiency wise. I advise using jets on distances greater than 700 miles hence the block time between a large turboprop and a jet on shorter ranges are almost the same.
Cheers~

Speed of the jet is also a factor
Use both. Don't bother with the fuel efficiency unless you're on negative cash flow. Even with low profit, operating a route gives you some advantages in a long run.

he's right sorta.

My apologies. I was getting my B707 & B747 models confused. You are correct, I meant the -320B/C models, not the -200B/C. Thank you for the correction.

Fuel efficiency should always be a consideration, but yes, I would use both as well.
707-120 lowest fuel/passenger/mile
For me, I still use prop aircraft till DC-8-50 and 707-320 come out. TU-144 and CL-44 are the most fuel efficient aircraft... in the game!

707-320B/C with 4/24/170 seating or Convair 880M with 2/15/115 will make most money from the early jets.
But they pale in comparison with yukons, Tu-114, il-18D's, vanguards, L-188A/C and even AN-10's. All of which cost roughly between 1/3rd and half to run and between 1/3rd and half to buy.
This isn't unrealistic, in fact early jets really were pieces of s*** compared to late superprops. Barely faster, way more noise, gas guzzling, airliners just bought jets because it was new and people thought it was better for whatever reason.

Barely faster, but still. Sometimes even half an hour makes a huge difference for people who fly X k miles. Also, faster airplane = more flights in a time window = more $ for the airline.

Agreed, don't buy many L-188A/C and AN-10's because their speed and range is so poor, I prefer buying 707s because they're way more versatile. The yukons and Tu-114's though are simply brilliant.

I,m use only 707-320B - 4700-5200 miles, DC-8-50 - 5200-5600 miles
Wow TU-144 is fuel efficient
It is worse than Concorde
I had one and they give me like 50k profit a month it is a disaster
They're quite terrible.
Worse Range.
Worse Fuel Flow
Worse Seats
Slightly faster turn time
About the same cruising speed (144D is slower, 144S is faster)
Benefit is a shorter runway (9,600 / 11,056)
And just a tad cheaper (320/315 million to the Concordes 350 million
