Well, depending on the size and age of your airline. If you have gathered a good amount of money, then you can start leasing new aircraft. When you don't have a lot of money to play around with, lease/buy used aircraft. I prefer to keep all of my aircraft under 15 years of age, firstly leasing them new for 10 years, then extending the lease for 5 years. So yeah, this is just my opinion. Hope it helped :D

IF you have a lot of money (500 million +), you can afford to mass buy (10 or more) almost any short-haul aircraft in the game. If you have 2 billion, you can almost mass buy the most expensive plane, the A380.

Lease =  Short term ( first few years, until you have hundreds of millions of $$$)

Buy = Long term ( when money is no issue )

If you only lease aircraft then after 10 in game years you are going to get quite a nice surprise with the masses of aircraft that now need to either be bought or lease contracts extended because their lease contracts have expired.

I like to lease & extend lease my planes until they are 15 years old, then buy them and sell when they're 25.

It all depends on your money and the rate of depreciation. Higher depreciating aircraft (Canadair Cl-44, Sud Caravelle, Boeing 747-8I) are much more profitable to lease for the first few years, as you end up paying less on leases than you would maintaining such a high depreciating aircraft. As these aircraft hit 7 yrs of service, begin to buy them. As half your lease goes into buying an aircraft, it comes up as free (or very little). For aircraft with low depreciation (Canadair Cl-215, Embraer Ejets, 737NG and, in fact, most modern aircraft) it makes financial sense to buy these, paying $100k a month on depreciation instead of 600k on a lease. For these aircraft, you'll get a much higher resale value (Cl-215s can be bought for $2.3M, sold after about 20 years for $1.9M).

Don't forget you will get a discount of 50% of the amount you have paid in leasing costs.

Everything that has been said above is true, but I think that it also depends on the era in which the airline is "taking shape". Some years might be more "productive" than others. If there are more years where newer, more efficient planes are coming out, I would suggest leasing aircraft, and then go for the newer variants This way, your contract is short, and leasing fees are a lot more affordable for smaller carriers. If you buy a plane, you are basically stuck with it for as long as you want. Replacing it very soon might be a waste of money, as you have paid more money buying that plane than if you had payed the small monthly fees required for leasing.

I am still very new to this game, but I think it makes sense....... right???
