I play AE pretty frequently and never really care about the ranking feature. In my current game, I was lucky enough to start my airline when the game started and my airline is HUGE now and running very well. I have over 2000 airplanes all of which are paid for, no leases, I have 6000 plus flights a day and 11 hubs and plenty of cash, yet I am only 6th in the ranking. All of the airlines ahead of me have a third of the fleet, hubs and distance. How can I be only 6th? A few days ago I was number 3 and I have only increased my fleet and paid off the airplanes and added new cities. Is it a glitch or is there some specific reason I am falling behind?

Again, not a huge deal but the number one airline only has 800 airplanes and 6 hubs, I have 2000 planes mostly of which are wide body aircraft! I don't understand the logic. How is valuation determined in the game?

Anyway, still love this game!

Don't the first place guy have the aircraft bought, not leased?

takes alot of time and effort, realistically the more money with the less routes etc seems to do the best

also it seems more miles / passenger numbers = more $ per valuation

Profit. See your financial tabs and see how many money do you get each month. It's the real deal.

As TNT88 said, it is all about profit. Personally, I prefer leasing the aircraft because it allows you to get a stronger footing at the start of the game, and you end up with more cash on hand. Also, look for routes that are long-haul with huge demand, they will bring you a lot of cash. Using bigger planes also helps, like for example, instead of 40x 737 frequencies on DXB-IST, it is more profitable to use 7x 747 frequencies. And, btw, 6th place is very good, expanding internationally more will help you climb through the ranks too.

The game actually penalises those who buy planes (especially planes like the Il-96, with 10% depreciation), as depreciation often ends up decreasing the value of your airline more than the leasing fee. The only bonus to buying planes is if you replace them all the time and have low depreciation on all of them; as the bulk purchase bonus exists only for buying, that gives a slight advantage to buying as opposed to leasing, but leasing is generally more profitable on a wider scale.
