There is a way you can merge two airlines into each other. It just takes some help and a lot of time to do (just like a real merger).

Not guaranteed but you match the airline looking to takeover a route matches the flights of the airline they has tacitly agreed a takeover with. That airline then cancels their flights and puts the aircraft up for sale telling the takeover airline. they then look to buy the sold aircraft as they come on the market. Then repeat the exercise. Works better if you are able to buy in bulk on the used market. Never any guarantee you timer it right to make the purchases.
As to why anyone would want to do it is beyond me.

Yeah it's kind of terrible, I tried it once and it murdered my airline.

Why not give shared control to the buying airline?

Realistically it isn't worth buying out airlines as much as it would be cool to but it wouldn't be worth it. Merging is possible but takes a while to complete as you will have to setup the merger airline on EVERY route of the airline you want to take over then phase out that airlines flights hubs etc when really its a waste of time and is more worth while just connecting both airlines into an alliance as then you open up each other to the alliance controlled hubs that either airline has setup which then opens access to passengers connecting from Company a to Company bs flights which then benefits both companies

If I managed an airline that I "Merged" And it became the #1, the owner would get the airline award.

Both of them should get awards, cos they contributed.
