So a comment by Zipp here made me want to post this...

American is no longer the global super power it was.

Personally, there is blaming America, then there is blaming Americans.

The system of government in America is odd, with the two party system and such, but meh, it's your hole.

I have no problems with Americans, I have some issues with the American Government.

Our super power status hasn't really changed... We're in the top in therms of military... And still in the top bracket in terms of financial.

America is a fake two party... We're more than that...

The problem at hand is that widely diverse political leaning people only claim allegiance to one of the two parties. You can have two people with the same exact political beliefs and be on two different parties. Why? Because the waters are muddy as ****. The US Republican party has been infected with the radical right (IE Tea Party) who are neither their own party, and not proper right. They're a bane on the existence of one of the oldest parties.

In general terms our two parties have very different opinions but can work together more or less. But then you have the third element come in and claim their part of a specific party but have such a radical view that they drown out the true party members.

A large portion of Democrats float to the left of the center line with most being Liberal on Social issues and being either left on Fiscal or center... then the Republican party being the exact opposite. Since the infection by the 'Tea Party', who are a disgrace to it's legacy, the Republican party has moved SO far right on both Social and Fiscal issues that it's no longer what it use to be. The US Government has been in a virtual lock down for the past 6 years because they refuse to compromise (when a majority of Americans don't want what they're offering).

Now this brings us to our most recent election. Why did the 'Left' lose? Lies and apathy. The Tea Party pretends to be a grassroots movement run by citizens who are fed up with government spending, when in reality they're funded by non-profit corporations that get limitless funds from some of the biggest names in lobbying for reducing government regulation. They then able to provide virtually limitless funds without disclosure. All it takes is a small rural district in an area that has under 500k people to get a member to the US House.

The Tea Part effectively claims to not be a party and rides under the banner of the Republicans (GOP) when in reality they are no where near it. Their followers and even candidates are generally uneducated in actual politics and make statements like "If I can balance my checkbook, why can't the government?"

Effectively we've allowed a third party to infiltrate one of our largest parties when they neither represent the proper view of the party, nor have it's best interests at heart. Their sole goal is personal greed. They will lie and spit on the constitution and claim the other person is doing it... When most don't even know the basics.

Now onto the second point. Apathy.

Stalemate and actual flat out lying as caused voter apathy in the US. We had a government that was so far right that it locked up anything we tried to pass... Thus the general uneducated among our voters opted to go for the other team to see if something would change. This only fixes the solution when you vote the more center than the far opposite. US politics don't work when we vote radicalism. To make things worst we have in-fighting amongst our leading party at the time (Democrats). Currently there seems to be a split between Obama and Clinton ideologies. There is encouragement from Democrats to distance themselves from the Apathy associated with Obama and this is believed to be one of the causes that made both Houses go to the same party away from the party that is in the Presidency.

I can only hope that those voted into power are not Tea Party RINOs and will actually bring the GOP back some respect and dignity that it much needs after being the party that forced us into a government shut down and threatened to default on our debt.

TL;DR Version: READ IT OR GO AWAY!

I know out there somewhere is a novel or short story in which Congress fails to pass a budget, the President takes emergency powers, then our entire legislative branch is replaced by a computer that takes input from referenda, calculates the optimal budget for whatever passes and everything moves on.

Was that about Hillary Clinton in 2016? Because then it's probably nonfiction.

An upshot of your 2 party system is you don't get nutjob parties (See Palmer United, the Greens, The Australian Sex Party etc)
