They tend to use more fuel, yes, but so not use more fuel the older they get

planes have outright engine changes in their lifetimes? [and thus the 10 year old DC-9 may be on it's first engine, while an older one may be using a 2nd, younger one and thus less fuel flow.]
So a 45 yr old DC-9 could have brand new engines meaning factory-fresh performance.
Also, some plane can be fitted with kits, winglets, enhancements etc. to help fuel flow aswell as some aircraft being able to be retrofitted with a newer engine type completely.
