1. Ranking  is base on how fast you progress instead of how far have you progressed.

2. A few artificial players to snap all the good airports before any real players in the beginning of the game. The AI players can slowly fade out once competition gets intense.

The benefits are:

1. We don't have to worry if there is no world restarting for a long time, because there is always a good world you can join.

2. The world can last for years, you don't have to play the entire lifetime.

3. Everybody can play his favorite era, we don't have to create so many different worlds just because everyone likes different era.

This would require:
As many worlds as there are active users
An AI to be implemented
A definition of what progress is
Players being allowed to specify their own world settings

Have you really considered how big a task this is?

I'll suggest an alternative: let players start in a running world with no starting aircraft. That would be simpler and make it easier to join into running worlds.

No, that's not what I mean. What I mean is:

I.e. the world runs from 1955-2030. If you just want to play 1970-2010,

you can join the world when the game date reaches 1970 and stop playing after 40 game years.

Everyone still play and compete in the same big world.

The point is, there should not be any advantage for starting early in the game i.e. when the world just reset.

Yes, we will need an AI and a definition of progress.

You can do the same thing in current worlds. You can also join for only 1970-2010 if you wanted to. Even in your ideal world and with AI, there would still be an advantage in starting early in game because the older airlines will have already taken delivery of a lot of aircraft by the time others join.

This would require:
A definition of what progress is

This is easy: Simply use the rate of growth of value or the profit margin. The actual size of the airline is not accounted for with these measures, so that active airlines rise higher than inactive ones. Additionally, no one really cares about airline value, IRL is all about profits and margins.

It's 2013. If humans hadn't messed up, there would be miles-tall skyscrapers, another planet colonized, and space transportation. That really isn't anything.

What did humans mess up?

Why do we need skyscraper miles high?

What's the point of colonising another planet if humans were never really built for living another planets which are very hostile to supporting human life?

Why do we need space transportation?

What the hell does all this technology you seem to imply humans should have by 2013 got to do with when AE is missing one key thing and that is manpower which you seem to fail to address.
