New York City-

Excel is continuing its march to solidify its leadership on the European continent with the inclusion of Austrian national carrier Austrian Airlines into the alliance. Austrian has recently entered merger negotiations with French carrier Vol Air Lines, which would see the two airlines combine under a single holding company. Austrian is one of Europe's most respected airlines operating a world class operation out of its hub at Vienna, as well as focus cities at Innsbruck, Salzburg and Graz with a fleet of McDonnell Douglas short haul jets and Airbus long haul aircraft.

At the press conference announcing the new member, Excel CEO Stephen Stevenson addressed questions over the clustering of Excel European members near each other. "Excel only wishes to boost our footprint in not only the world's developing markets, but also in it's established markets in the face of competition in the area".  He went on to commend Austrian for building an efficient and modern operation out of Vienna, calling it a new gateway hub for travelers flying with Excel member airlines. "Excel is committed to giving customers a range of choices for getting them where to go. We rely upon larger, international and globally respected brands to be the face of the alliance, as opposed to our competition which relies upon lots of regional brands to do its flying."
