They are the points so to say on the end of a aircraft s wing, they increase aerodynamics and decrease drag therefore using less fuel

The "Fin" on the wingtip is the part of the aircraft called winglets, Theese can be mounted on most aircrafts both before and after delivery to the airline.
The task of the winglet is to reduce the Vortex ( Turbulent Air ) Behind the wing that produces Drag.
Less Drag = Less fuel consumption = Less Fuel Costs
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fuel flow is the amount of fuel the engines use per hour.
Higher Fuel flow = More fuel costs

To be honest, the high price is fair enough for their longer-term savings, great for keeping older aircraft operating competitively, e.g. Thomson Airways add winglets to their Boeing 757's to keep them competitive with the like of Monarch, who operatemuch newer, more efficient Airbus A321's on many of their routes.

Winglets are also suposed to disperse vibration on the wings.
The 2nd best pleasure in the world is to fly, the 1st one is to land
