40 DIE IN PLANE CRASH

An airliner has crashed while trying to make an emergency landing in Peru, with up to 40 people dead, according to police.

The Boeing 737-200 airliner was reported to have had 93 passengers and seven crew.

Reports from the scene said it split into two.

It had left from Lima en route to Iquito with a stop at Puccalpa, where it crashed as it was attempting an emergency landing on the Federico Basadre motoway close to the airport.

"We are standing next to the cabin and we can see the body and it appears that it is a flight attendant in her uniform," said a correspondent for a Peruvian radio station Radioprogramas.

"There are bodies of children. Many bodies."

Airport officials were not immediately available to confirm the information.

Lizandro Torro, a spokesman for Tans, a passenger airline run by Peru's military, said the airline was evaluating the scope of the accident and would make a statement later.

Yes very tragic. I lived in Peru and if you saw the shape they keep their plane in and the age of them. In some cases they fly L1011's with rust on them. Especially if its flown by the millitary which they have more airlines than fighter jets, its unfortunate. There tends to be a couple of crashes per year on the lower airlines in Peru. If you choose to visit Peru and want to go some place other than Lima, i'd suggest taking AeroPeru is no longer Peruvian owned. Its called LanPeru owned buy LanChile.
