ANSETT the best god-damned airline in Australia (and New Zealand under the guise of ANSETT New Zealand). In the end it was sucessive poor CEO's, and a lack of interest, from Air NZ. ANSETT's empire included much more than just a sophisticated route network across Aussie, ANSETT once owned some of the best, and most luxurious resrts in Australia and a small international operation that was considered , one of the best international services on the planet.
The airline was so important to Australia that when it collapsed, the New Zealand PM (Helen Clark), was held up from leaving Melbourne by airport staff (The New Zealand government gave Air NZ $825 mil, to bail it out of almost certain liquidation).
Such beautiful aircraft... (sigh)
When the final flight landed in Sydney on an overnight flight from Perth, a nation mourned...

it would have been so amazing if the had of been able to grow their international arm, it would have been easily able to compete with QANTAS, and all that Star alliance through traffic aswell.

Minor point, but consider that statement:
If that's true, it never had a chance!
So does that make Qantas the only kingpin in that part of the world now?

Air New Zealand also exists, but will never be able to match the size of QANTAS because New Zealand is so much smaller and can't attract the same passengers as Australia which has double the population. Although Air New Zealand is able to compete effectively with QANTAS due to superior service and price, although Air New Zealands product leaves alot to be desired. But next year starting september when Air New Zealand's new B777's and 7E7's arrive, Air New Zealand will be the Virgin Atlantic of the South Pacific

Aus is much closer to 4x NZs size, not 2x. Have you flown AirNZ by the way?
